Freetown – Sierra Leone
In 2007, The SAFE Foundation started funding a project, run by partner organisation Global Rescue Mission, Sierra Leone, (GRM-SL), to empower local women in Freetown by providing employment in a cookshop called Mamma Educate! Many women in African countries face ostracization if they are widowed or divorced and as a result face demoralizing results. Mamma Educate reintegrated women into communities, and the profits from the cookshop fund the school fees and education costs of local children on the streets.
The cookshop is being built by local people. The process was delayed for a few months whilst land disputes were settled and a suitable piece of land was appropriated. Building is well under way now and the project is expected to be fully operational in 2009.
