Breaking Free from Fast Fashion: How to Shop Sustainably for Clothing29/04/2023
Are you wanting to change your shopping habits and avoid fast fashion outlets? Look no further! Here are some easy tips and solutions to help you shop ethically for clothing.
Firstly, shopping second-hand is an excellent way to find unique and high-quality items that don’t contribute to the negative environmental impact of fast fashion. And let’s not forget about the thrill of the hunt when searching for hidden gems in thrift and charity shops. Plus, you’ll be doing your part in reducing waste and keeping items out of landfills.
Bonus: visit our Ethical Boutique if you are nearby, otherwise check out Vinted and Depop, (It can become very addictive, don’t say we didn’t warn you…)
If you are unable to get hold of something second-hand, supporting sustainable and ethical brands is a great option. But it can be challenging to know which brands to trust as there is a large amount of greenwashing that goes on. That’s where ‘Good on You’ comes in – a website/app that rates companies based on their impact on the planet, people, and animals, allowing you to make more informed decisions.
But shopping sustainably doesn’t have to stop there. Extending the lifecycle of your clothes is also crucial. Repair cafes are a fantastic way to learn how to fix and mend clothes, creating a sense of community and fostering new skills. Swap shops/ parties are another excellent way to recycle clothes and give them a second life whilst having fun. Join SAFE in their swap parties, where you can meet like-minded people and learn about other ways to live ethically.
Remember, small steps towards a sustainable wardrobe can make a big impact on the planet and people. So why not give it a try and see how it can benefit both you, the environment and people who are sadly exploited within the fast fashion industry? Let’s work together towards a more ethical future!
