No Smoke Without Fire: Eco-Cookery Project in India

Are you passionate about sustainability, cultural exchange, and learning new skills? This fully funded volunteer trip to India might be your perfect adventure!

Project Summary:

The “No Smoke Without Fire” project is a unique opportunity to learn alongside communities in Mugaiyur, Tamil Nadu, about eco-friendly cooking methods. This 2 week fully funded Taith project, in association with the Royal Society of the Arts, aims to:

  • Raise awareness, design and build creative sustainable cooking options like fabric slow cooker bags and wooden sun cookers.
  • Benefit the community by saving money on fuel, promoting safety (no open fires!), and reducing harmful smoke inhalation.
  • Foster cultural exchange through shared experiences and learning about each other’s food cultures through intercultural evenings and celebrations.
  • Serve as a catalyst for personal growth, as participants step out of their comfort zones and embrace new challenges with open minds and hearts.

What you’ll do:

  • Learn to make fabric slow cooker bags and wooden sun cookers alongside other young people in the community.
  • Work collaboratively with Indian communities, focusing on cultural sensitivity and mutual learning.
  • Embrace intercultural exchange through shared meals and celebrating traditions.

What’s included:

  • Fully funded trip to India including flights, accommodation and food for 14 days.
  • Comprehensive 6-week pre-departure training on cultural sensitivity, project goals, and practical skills.
  • Residential training in South Wales.
  • Support from an experienced team member throughout the project.

Who can apply?

We are looking for 10 enthusiastic young people aged 18-25 who are:

  • Passionate about sustainability and environmental issues.
  • Open to learning new skills and cultural exchange.
  • Team players with a positive attitude.

Welsh Government is giving additional support to people with disabilities and more information on this can be requested through the application form.
