06/05/2025Empowering Young People Through Events: The Success of SAFE O’Gympas Cymru
Over the past year, the SAFE o Gympas Cymru (SAFE Around Wales) project has been making a meaningful impact on young lives across Wales. Funded by WCVA, this ambitious initiative set out to equip 25 young people from disadvantaged backgrounds with valuable skills and experiences in events management—and it has delivered beyond expectations. From the outset, participants were immersed in a series of interactive workshops covering event design, marketing, budgeting, inclusion, and sustainability. These sessions weren’t just theoretical—they provided hands-on learning opportunities that helped build confidence, creativity, and real-world understanding of the events industry. In addition to the workshops, the young people also earned essential qualifications in first aid and food hygiene—credentials that will serve them well in a variety of job sectors. They received practical training in barista skills, stewarding, and retail, gaining experience by working at more than 20 events held throughout the year. The project not only offered professional development, but also helped foster a sense of community, purpose, and belonging. By creating inclusive pathways into the workforce, SAFE o Gympas Cymru is helping to break down barriers and build a brighter future for young people across Wales. As we look to the future, the success of this project highlights the importance of continued investment in youth-led initiatives that promote skills, confidence, and inclusion.
